Emergency Milwaukee Public Safety Meeting Spotlights Police Union, City Contract Fight

Milwaukee police department staffing shortages again became a topic of conversation at an emergency Common Council public safety and health committee meeting Wednesday. The meeting was called in part to address a recent uptick in gun violence downtown, specifically near Water Street.

The popular stretch of bars along Water Street is at the center of numerous police investigations. Earlier this month, someone shot five people, killing two, outside ELMNT nightclub. Just this weekend, two separate shootings injured two others near Water and Knapp streets.

“We are seeing larger crowds, we are seeing, again, behavior that disregards authority in many cases, and we are seeing that disregard perpetuated by being egged on through social media promoters. Whatever the case may be, it is more acceptable because it is popular,” Chief of staff Heather Hough said.
