West Michigan Fire Crews Face Safety Risks Amid Staffing Shortages

Muskegon, MI — Fire departments across West Michigan are sounding the alarm—not about flames, but about staffing. Fire departments are facing serious staffing shortages, with trucks often rolling out with just one or two firefighters.

The Muskegon Firefighters Union said it’s putting crews and communities at risk, especially in the summer heat.

“If there’s a viable rescue at a house fire that we go to, our firefighters are put in a really tough choice of there’s laws and standards that dictate whether they can or can’t go inside and those require a certain amount of staffing to be on scene,” said Hewartson.
